The TBT-6950PD Advantage

Better compatibility
Built for Mixed Fleets and Managed IT Environments:: The TBT-6950PD is a hybrid dock that combines USB-C and DisplayLink technologies, making it ideal for environments where not every computer has the same capabilities. It supports up to four external displays with Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 hosts—two more than the TS4. Even with a more limited USB-C host that supports only one display natively, it can still drive up to three—outperforming the TS4 by one. Whether you're managing a fleet of workstations or more modest laptops, the TBT-6950PD adapts to your setup with display capabilities.
Superior macOS compatibility: Thanks to DisplayLink technology, the TBT-6950PD is significantly more compatible with macOS devices, including M1, M2, and M3 Macs.
These Mac models are limited in terms of how many external displays they can natively support. However, with DisplayLink technology the TBT-6950PD enables multi-display setups that would otherwise be impossible.
The CalDigit TS4, on the other hand, due to the lack of the DisplayLink technology built-in to the TBT-6950PD is restricted by the host Mac’s native external display limitations, making it a less versatile choice for Mac users who need multiple external displays.
Total number of displays possible when using Mac hosts | ||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
M1 | M2 | M3 | M4 | M1, M2, M3, M4 Pro | M1, M2, M3, M4 Max | |
Plugable TBT-6950 PD | 3 | 3 | 4 (with laptop lid closed) | 4 | 4 | 4 |
CalDigit TS4 | 1 | 1 | 2 (with laptop lid closed) | 2 | 2 | 2 |
All combined, The TBT-6950PD’s advanced display support and broad compatibility make it ideal for mixed environments, offering a one-size-fits-all docking solution for any computer.
Video capability
Larger number of connected displays: The TBT-6950PD supports up to four external displays at up to 3840x2160 resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate via a combination of its two HDMI video output ports and downstream Thunderbolt/USB-C ports.
The CalDigit TS4 only supports a maximum of two external displays, which limits its effectiveness in complex desktop environments.
Further to this, the TS4 includes a DisplayPort output which is less common than HDMI and requires costly active adapters to convert to HDMI. To connect two HDMI displays, users must buy both a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a USB-C to HDMI adapter. In contrast, the TBT-6950PD supports two HDMI displays natively out of the box, with no need for extra adapters.
Separate Components necessary for driving two HDMI displays | |
---|---|
TBT-6950PD | Cal Digit TS4 |
No extra devices necessary | Active DisplayPort to HDMI adapter |

Host connectivity
Longer Thunderbolt 4 cable: The TBT-6950PD includes a 1.0-meter 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 cable in the box, while the CalDigit TS4 only includes a 0.8-meter cable. While it may not sound like a big difference, it equates to approximately a six-inch advantage for the Plugable cable.
Better host port location: The TBT-6950PD connects to the host computer via a Thunderbolt host connection port located on the side of the unit. This allows all ports on the front and back of the dock to be available for peripherals. The CalDigit TS4 has the host connection port on the back of the unit, meaning that one less external peripheral can be connected to the back.
Compatibility testing
Extensive Interoperability Testing: Compatibility is a top priority for Plugable. The TBT-6950PD has undergone rigorous testing across various operating systems, including Windows and macOS, and is Thunderbolt certified by Intel.
Additionally, it’s tested with multiple models of major laptop brands like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, and Apple to ensure seamless functionality in diverse environments.

Conclusion
Both the Plugable TBT-6950PD and CalDigit TS4 docking stations offer impressive capabilities, but they’re built with different priorities in mind. Making the right choice depends on your specific needs.
If your workflow demands a high number of USB ports or dedicated 3.5mm analog audio jacks (including support for microphones), the TS4 may be a better fit.
However, if you’re managing a mixed fleet of laptops (especially with Macs) or working in an IT-managed environment where display flexibility and broad compatibility are key, the TBT-6950PD stands apart. Thanks to its hybrid Thunderbolt and DisplayLink architecture, it supports up to four displays with Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 hosts—two more than the TS4. Even on more limited USB-C systems, it can still drive up to three displays. It also features a longer Thunderbolt 4 cable, a more accessible side-mounted host connection, and better macOS compatibility out of the box.
On top of the hardware advantages, Plugable backs the TBT-6950PD with extensive compatibility testing and responsive, in-house customer support—giving IT teams peace of mind and end users a better experience. For teams that value flexible display support and dependable service, the TBT-6950PD is a powerful and practical choice.
